For all the haters who thought last year’s Beyond was a fluke, Farm not only dismisses those misgivings, it runs over them like a freight train. Make no mistake; this is the best Dinosaur Jr. album in quite some time; like a decade. The songs here are catchy without resorting to mindless pop, while still maintaining a firm grasp of what made alternative rock so great in the 90s; namely beautiful melodies and songs about being in love; not to mention the pains that come with it. J Mascis sounds more assured than ever here, and his confidence shines through on every track. First single “I Want You To Know” is probably the closest the Dinos have ever come to “swaggering”, but they pull it off without the slightest trace of irony or smugness. On “Your Weather”, Lou Barlow’s haunted voice harkens back to the heyday of Soundgarden and The Meat Puppets. And with a stunning sense of drive and fun; expect to hear “Over It” on at least one skate video this year. Things don’t weaken in the second half of the record either. The final one two punch of “I Don’t Wanna Go There” and “Imagination Blind” shows J Mascis pulling off some of his best guitar magic since You’re Living All Over Me. It’s quite a rare thing these days to find an album where you remember the solos more than the actual choruses. So if you’re sick of everything with the prefix “post”, “lo-fi”, “no-fi”, or “ambient” then give a listen to one of the best straight up rock albums in years. (Jagjaguwar)
