TOMS Gives Sight
by Priscilla WardBlake Mycoskie began TOMS shoes on a mission to give children in developing countries a pair of shoes for every pair of shoes bought. Mycoskie’s vision for giving is expanding, TOMS is launching a line of eyewear. For every pair you purchase, TOMS will help give sight to a person in need through its One for One campaign. John Whitledge, Trovata Creative Director collaborated with Mycoskie to make this possible. When Whitledge designs something he always begins with a story. Blake’s story begins with Argentina in 2006 when he found the children had no shoes to protect their feet. Blake also recognizes the increasing need to help give people vision. Whitledge wanted to design a pair of glasses that were reminiscent of the One For One program and the Argentina flag. The Italian made glasses each have an iconic design striping detail, with the hand-painted stripes symbolizing the three elements of One for One. The colors represents the person you have helped, and hopefully will help us eternalize that these glasses we are helping someone around the world. According to sources, blindness and visual impairment is the seventh-largest health disability in the world. Almost 284 million people in the world are visually impaired, and nearly 90% live in developing countries. Two-thirds of people who are blind are female. Thirty-nine million people in the world are blind, and more than 18 million children around the world suffer from blindness or impaired vision.
